Introduction

The Editorial on the Research Topic Advances in the Prevention and Treatment of Inflammation-Associated Preterm Birth. Despite the widely appreciated fact that preterm birth (PTB) is a syndrome and the potential consequence of many different pathways [1], there is unequivocal evidence that inflammation lies at the core of the majority of the pathophysiological causes of PTB. While ascending bacterial infection is a important and well-studied cause of inflammation-associated PTB in very preterm deliveries, other “sterile” causes are dominant at later gestational ages.
