Abstract
This is just the kind of news I was hoping to hear in response to my August editorial (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop 2001;120:97). Your report of additional research on the use of metal archwires and brackets is encouraging. I have recently approved for publication at least 2 articles that provide information regarding the release of metal ions from the fixed appliances currently in use. Prior reports indicate that very small amounts of nickel and chromium are released into saliva immediately after the placement of fixed appliances. But knowing that orthodontic treatment can and often does take as long as 2 or 3 years, is there a long-term problem with the continued release of metallic ions?
