But the articles that make up Mediterranean Studies 30.2 announced their unifying theme without any such interference. In these articles, the Mediterranean appears as the work of human inhabitants who inscribe the region in all its variants on the ground it occupies. This is a view of the Mediterranean that takes the built environment as the primary text for the study of the region. Such a view emerged from Darryl Phillips’s comments on interdisciplinarity in Mediterranean studies during the 2020 MSA Congress Panel Discussion. In his presentation at that panel discussion, Professor Phillips recounted his own journey as a classicist from the Mediterranean text in print to the Mediterranean text on the ground, anticipating the direction of scholarship in the articles that would soon arrive in our inbox.
