Abstract

The noted Soviet demographer V. I. Perevedentsev is no newcomer to Soviet Education; his essay "Choosing an Occupation" appeared in the November 1980 issue (vol. XXIII, no. 1), and an article and another lengthy essay written by him, entitled "School and the Young Family," were included in the October 1983 issue on "Demographic Determinants of Soviet Educational Policy" (vol. XXV, no. 12). Like the two earlier essays, the Russian version of this more recent selection from his work appeared in the monthly pamphlet series "Pedagogy and Psychology," which is published by the "Znanie" [Knowledge] Society, the principal source of adult education literature in the Soviet Union. The intended readership is the national teaching profession, the parents of schoolchildren, and other adults with responsibility for raising the younger generation.
