Abstract

The short feature this month on tests with high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coatings contains one comment that set me thinking, and reminded me that test results can sometimes have an obvious result that is only part of the whole story. The comment was: ‘Given the polishing effect on chrome surfaces during the initial cycling that results from interaction with dynamic seals and bearings, the Ra parameter was adequate as any anomalies in the chrome surface topography would be removed over time in service.’ From my own experience the reality is rather more complex. As new surface treatments for wear and corrosion resistance evolve, it will be necessary to look at them and their effects very carefully.
