Abstract

The emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria has driven the need for novel antibiotics. Our investigations have focussed on lichens as they naturally produce a wide range of unique and very effective defence chemicals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of British churchyard lichens. Crude extracts from ten common lichen species were tested against six bacteria and two fungi by disc diffusion susceptibility testing. Extracts showed inhibition of Gram positive bacteria and dermatophytic fungi. Diploica canescence and Pertusaria amara showed the most potent antimicrobial activity.
