Abstract
The ASJSA 1973 Citation of Merit recognized the Bend (Ore.) Bulletin as a “newspaper that was a pioneer in establishing a successful press council and that has shown leadership in supporting the concept of media evaluation.” Harvey C. Jacobs, 1972–73 president of the American Society of Journalism School Administrators, presented the award at a luncheon Aug. 21 during the AEJ convention in Ft. Collins, Colo. Donald E. Brown, awards committee chairman, said that Robert W. Chandler, Bulletin editor, has fostered a community press council since 1967. The council has nine members who meet periodically with Chandler to provide feedback from readers to the editor, to discuss community and journalistic problems of mutual interest, to consider occasional complaints from readers, and to offer suggestions for improving the newspaper's service to the community. Tribute to the Bulletin and to Chandler, who is on 10-month leave to do consulting work for newspapers in four Central American countries, was paid by William H. Hornby, Denver Post executive editor and vice president. Hornby's speech to the ASJSA luncheon is printed below.
