Abstract

This article expounds the notes that exist with regard to ancient editions of the Synods of the Diocese of Mondonedo and other Synods which have not been edited. It is a minute exposition of each individual Synod from 1534 to 1703. Due to the quantity of data for each Synod this study is of great interest for bibliographers and lovers of the history of printing as well as those interested in the history of synodal legislation. Possibly the most curious aspect studied is the Synod of 1575 of which the manuscript and the draft for printing is preserved but the document was never edited or published. The Synod of 1586 was published but was unknown in Mondonedo in 1617, an example was discovered in Burgos but has now been lost. This study recomposes the original text, indicating number of pages it had and as much of the text that we know from the 1618 edition. Most curious is the case of the two different editions of the 1620 Synod. The first part is different in each edition and then there are similarities and differences. Galician historians of printing are unaware of this case. To aid identification an appendix is offered of the Synod of 1620 and some others. All the documents studied in this article can be found in the Synodal Collection Lamberto de Echeverria of the Pontifical University of Salamanca and are described in its catalogue.
