Abstract

Abstract An expression for the edge dislocation climb velocity, which is found to depend almost linearly on the applied stress, is derived using the nonsymmetrical vacancy distribution produced by the climb process. By comparing the climb velocity obtained here to that of Nix, Gasca-Neri and Hirth (1971), which resembles the one presented, it is possible to evaluate the external cut-off parameter of the diffusion area in their equation. Furthermore, the range of climb velocities, where the possible vacancy concentration dependence of the vacancy diffusion coefficient has no effect on the vacancy distribution around the climbing edge dislocation, is illustrated for different temperatures.
