Abstract

Optical burst switching (OBS) is a very promising switching technology of the optical networks. In OBS networks, when contention occurs at an intermediate core switch, the bursts that are in contention will be dropped if no appropriate contention resolution scheme is applied. In this paper, we propose an Edge Buffer Based Contention Resolution (EBR) Scheme, which mitigates and resolves contention by deflecting the contending bursts to the electronic buffer of the schedule module in the edge node which is directly connected with the core switching node. We have simulated EBR scheme under self- similar traffic and the simulation results indicate that our scheme has a significantly good performance on decreasing the burst dropping rate and its simplicity makes it convenient to collaborate with other contention resolution schemes.
