Abstract

J Travel Med 2004; 11:251–252. Ectopic schistosomiasis is uncommon. A case of female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) in a returned traveler is presented. This may have led to infertility and subsequent ectopic pregnancy, which are documented complications in individuals living in endemic areas, but rare in returned travelers. The case underscores the fact that unusual manifestations of schistosomiasis may occasionally be seen in travelers from nonendemic countries. Even though schistosomiasis of the upper female genital tract can be difficult to diagnose, a detailed travel history is important and may result in earlier diagnosis and treatment.
