Abstract

Host range and distribution of chiggers were studied in 2 forested areas of western Oregon: a climax sprucehemlock forest in Neptune State Park (NSA) and a mixed 2nd growth fir-oak forest in the Willamette Valley (FSA). In NSA, Euschoengastia oregonensis was the most common chigger, followed in decreasing order of abundance by Neotrombicula harperi, Comatacarus americanus, Neotrombicula cavicola and Chatia setosa . In FSA, N. harperi was the most abundant species, followed by E. oregonensis, C. americanus, N. cavicola and Ch. setosa . Four species collected in other parts of Oregon and reported here as new state records are Neotrombicula brennani, Neotrombicula sp. nr. loomisi, Euschoengastia sp. nr. sciuricola , and Miyatrombicula cynos .
