Abstract

The main issue of the present study was to evaluate Cd, Zn, Pb and Cu uptake in chironomid larvae and other freshwater benthic macro-invertebrates under field conditions. Secondly, laboratory experiments were performed to relate trace metal uptake in chironomid larvae with effects on growth and development, and to assess the fate of accumulated trace metals during metamorphosis or upon predation.
