Abstract

João dos Reis Gomes, considered an unavoidable figure in the Madeiran cultural scene, had several cultural interventions throughout his life, making him a voice considered in remarkable events of the Madeiran 20th century. One of these milestones was the orchestration of the Madeiran Centenary, which, in addition to the inherent political aspect, sought to expand the Madeira brand as a tourist and cultural destination. The echoes in the Tenerife press are remarkable, with the accompaniment of the Madeiran celebration, including a delegation of Santa Cruz de Tenerife to participate in the Fifth Centenary.
