Abstract

A summary is given of the economic factors which have a bearing on the development of off-shore mining, a term which is not taken to include mining under the sea from shafts on land, beach workings or extraction of minerals from sea-water. Current operations on the continental shelf that fall within this definition are described briefly. The minerals being worked appear to be limited to sand and gravel, calcium carbonate, tin, barytes, iron sands and sulphur. A summary of the work carried out on gold and other heavy minerals, diamonds, phosphorite and silica stone is also included.
