Abstract

Marriage is always contemplated to be a costly affair. But several studies point to the fact that those who get married are financial well off when compared to that of single people. It is because of their responsibilities and societal hopes that they earn more and lead a satisfactory life. On the other hand, there is a large number of breakdowns in these relationships which is legally bounded. Divorce issues devastate the financial status of an individual. It creates social, economic and psychological pressures on both the party and their families. In Kerala, the divorce rates are growing at an unimaginable rate. To analyze the marriage expenditure and the legal expense with alimony approved by the court and to examine the correlation of marriage expense over alimony, a case study is conducted in the Kozhikode district of Kerala. This study is an attempt to analyze the economics of marriage with special emphasis on the economic sufferings.
