Abstract

Abstract This article examines what is known regarding the economic characteristics of industrial water use. Understanding the economic dimension of industrial water use is important for several reasons. First, in some countries, industrial water use is already an important part of total water use. Furthermore, in a number of countries, the proportion of total water use accounted for by industry is rising rapidly. Second, much of industrial water use results in significant alterations in water quality. Third, industrial water use differs from water use in other sectors because many firms recycle water and because many firms may choose their source of water supply.
