Abstract Ethical considerations are important not only for evaluating alternative economic systems and policy proposals, but because supposedly value free 'positive economics' often contains implicit ethical premises. Moreover, moral beliefs need to be studied because they affect the actions of economic agents. These considerations are applied to the evolving post-communist world, 'business ethics', the economics of politics, rational problem solving, selfinterested cooperation and labour market impediments. It is concluded that a more critical scrutiny of widely accepted moral beliefs and the moral implications of alternative economic policies is required.
