Abstract

Abstract : Economic sanctions are but one of the many tools of diplomacy utilized as part of the overall U.S. policy response to objectionable actions of foreign governments. This research 7 paper explores and assesses the effectiveness and appropriateness of economic sanctions as an instrument of national power with specific emphasis on the imposition of economic sanctions on Cuba and Iran. This paper will examine - four main aspects of economic sanctions. The first is to define and identify what economic sanctions are. The second is to examine the relevancy of economic sanctions. The third is to determine if economic sanctions are viable instruments of -national power. And the fourth aspect is to determine if - economic sanctions are useful in achieving our national security - objectives. Utilizing our current policy on economic sanctions and examining its relevancy, this paper will make recommendations that clearly show that the U.S. government needs to reform its sanctions policy.
