Abstract

The power quality (PQ) enhancement strategy is presented for a standalone system with battery supported and self-excited induction generator (SEIG) as source of supply. The main source of this standalone system is the power from the SEIG driven by the hydro turbine. However, when its operating at variable loads, as well as nonlinear loads, etc. the PQ issues are arise. So, the PQ indices are improved by integrating a universal active power filter (UAPF), which consists of two voltage source converters sharing common DC point. The voltage qualities are enhanced using the series active power filter (APF) of UAPF and maintains the harmonics free constant magnitude voltage across the load, regardless of any variation in generated voltage. Moreover, the power indices such as current harmonics, reactive power, power factor, etc. are improved by the shunt APF of the UAPF, simultaneously along with voltage quality enhancement. The distorted signals’ fundamental components are extracted using the adaptive generalized integrator (AGI) control algorithm, to estimate the reference signals and the switching pulses, to ensure the effective and efficient power quality improvement during various conditions. The IEEE standard 519 is being followed by the source currents and the load voltages.
