Abstract

It is shown under a very general set of conditions that Soviet multi-product enterprises should be technically efficient in the sense that factors are fully employed and put to best internal use. Soviet firms may also be economically efficient to the extent that supplies respond to selected purchaser's demand. These attributes suggest that the economic efficiency potential of Soviet firms is higher than many institutional theorists intimate, but at the same time falls very short of the Paretian ideal.
