Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper examines the relationship between the recent trend towards the “globalization” of democratic norms and the increasing integration of developing countries into the international capitalist economy. Notwithstanding the claim that the decentralization of economic centres of wealth is linked to the dispersion of political power throughout a society, this paper analyses the political context of Indonesia's current economic reforms to show that some states which enthusiastically adopt strategies of economic liberalization have strong countervailing pressures which prevent the establishment of democratic norms and institutions.
