Abstract

The 12th Migration Dialogue seminar was held April 29-May 1, 2004 in Vienna and Bratislava. Its focus was migration in the heart of Europe, especially the impacts of EU enlargement, recent changes in Austrian im migration and integration policy, and migration issues in the Slovak Repub lic. Migration Dialogue seminars provide an opportunity for European and American opinion leaders to learn about migration issues in concrete set tings. There is a 6-to-l difference in per capita income between Austria and the Slovak Republic, but relatively little labor migration.1 After May 1, 2004, borders between these formerly distant neighbors became more per meable, as Slovaks now are able to travel to Austria without passports, but they cannot work unless their employers obtain work permits on their behalf.
