Summary
This paper is situated in goal 3 of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) which is to ensure healthy living and promote well-being for all at all ages by 2030. In line with this goal, it is expected that by 2030, (i) there will be a reduction in the global maternity mortality rate to less than 70 per 100,000 live births; (ii) there will be an end to preventable death of new-borns and children under 5 years of age, a reduction of under-5 mortality rate to 25 per 1,000; and (iii) to substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination. LEAB increased marginally from 48.2 to 53.4 years within the same period (World Development Indicators [WDI], 2018)
