Abstract

High-temperature superconducting (HTS) power cables offer significant advantages for long-distance high-capacity transmission. In order to meet the increasing demand in a power system, HTS power cables can be utilized for effective transmission expansion planning. However, when a fault occurs in a power system, the low impedance of the HTS cables can have an adverse impact on the system protection. In order to resolve the fault current issue, fault current limiting (FCL) HTS cables can be introduced for transmission expansion planning. The introduction of FCL-HTS cables can lead to an economical operation of a power system. This paper presents an economic evaluation method for the FCL-HTS cables in transmission expansion. A numerical example is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
