Abstract

In several communities across Massachusetts, unions have teamed up with community groups to begin to enter previously little touched territory: local economic development policies. Labor educator Mary Jo Connelly sets the context by exploring why unions are becoming involved in economic development decisions in the state. Participants Peter Knowlton and Pete Capano describe the experience of their two newborn economic development coalitions in Lynn and in southeastern Massachusetts. Harneen Chernow, education and training director for the Massachusetts AFLCIO, closes by describing the role the state federation has played in fostering this activity.
