Abstract

Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) was established in 1948 to coordinate policies for the promotion of economic development in the Latin American region. The Commission, comprising representatives of every member state, normally meets every two years at ministerial level. It considers matters relating to the economic and social development of the region, reviews activities of the organization, and adopts programmes of work. The secretariat is headed by the Offices of the Executive Secretary and of the Secretary of the Commission. ECLAC’s work programme is carried out by the following divisions: Economic Development; Social Development; Economic and so on. ECLAC works to enhance capacity building in demographic analysis, and to integrate population factors into development policies and planning, with a focus on understanding and combating poverty and inequalities. ECLAC’s proposed regular budget for 2022, an appropriation from the UN, amounted to US $59.8m.
