Abstract

Brassica oleracea, which belongs to the family Brassicaceae, is an important vegetable crop worldwide. Domestication of this species has resulted in many diverse morphological types, such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, and kale. Together with B. rapa and B. nigra, it is one of the components of the Brassica ‘U’ triangle (UN 1935). Furthermore, B. oleracea, as the source of the C genome, is one of the progenitor species of the allopolyploid crops B. napus (AC genomes) and B. carinata (BC genomes). It is also closely related to the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. These features make B. oleracea essential for the study of polyploid evolution, and also for investigating new approaches to crop improvement.
