Abstract
The Northeast of Brazil gained prominence at the beginning of the 21st century because its production grew faster than the national average, driven mainly by the expansion of employment and income, consumer credit and the attraction of a relevant investment block public and private. The implementation and consolidation of social policies (income transfer and valorization of the minimum wage) contributed to the dynamism of the regional economy, as well as the development of agribusiness related to fruit exports in the irrigated perimeters of the region. The recent economic dynamics impacted the productive structure by reducing the relative importance of traditional productive bases linked to the livestock / cotton / polyculture and sugar and alcohol complexes, by the significant advance of the tertiary, industry and agribusiness, by the dynamization of productive bases of small and medium size and of local productive arrangements and, in addition, the promotion and consolidation of productive investment projects and economic infrastructure. It is this dynamic that the article proposes to explore in order to characterize the emergence of a process of expansion of employment and family income, which has been favorable to a reduction of income inequality in the region.
