Abstract
The Ecological Studies series presents a symposium and workshop convened by the South African savanna ecosystem project. The 28 papers are divided into six sections: structure, determinants, function, dynamics and management. The contributing scientists were mostly from South Africa itself, with others from other African nations, Australia, Brazil, Venezuela, Israel and Europe. The opening section is mostly descriptive of savanna vegetation in several parts of the world, and is followed by papers on obvious ecological linkages, such as soils, soil nutrients and fire. Modern work on ecosystem metabolism considers processes such as water relations, herbivory, and nitrogen partition and near the end, dynamics and management are dealt with, mainly in the context of the concepts of stability and resilience.
