Abstract

Abstract The paper presents comparative studies of the annual breeding cycle of two species of antarctic petrels, namely the Cape pigeon and the Snow petrel. In the case of the Cape pigeon, colonies on Haswell Island near Mirnyy Observatory (East Antarctica) are compared with those near Bellingshausen Station on King George Island in the South Orkney Islands. In the case of the Snow petrel, colonies on Haswell Island are compared with others in East Antarctica, e.g., near Davis Station (Prydz Bay) and near Dumont d'Urville Station in Adelie Land. Details of the timing and duration of each aspect of the breeding cycle, rates of growth of juveniles, diet, mortality rates, etc., are presented in each case.
