Abstract
Intensive oceanographic research during the past 20 years has given new data on the distribution of the deep-sea bottom fauna, thus making possible the establishment of basic distribution laws. These new data on the composition and distribution of the deep-sea benthos have been used to study the relationship of both the whole bottom fauna and its separate groups to the peculiar environmental conditions of the abyssal ocean. In particular, recent work on polychaetes has shown the existence of a specific abyssal fauna among this most widely distributed oceanic group
