Abstract

These maps show forest types on the scale of 1 mile/1 inch, and are based on ecological survey and the earlier volumetric survey by the New Zealand Forest Service. Each sheet is self contained, in that the forest types are very briefly defined on the reverse side, where there are also useful notes under the headings physiography, soils, climate, animals, history, land tenure, timber resources, and recreation. Each forest type “is a unique association of dominant trees”, dominance being “estimated in terms of size, mean density and frequency”. Types are grouped into classes, which are dilferentiated by colour.
