Abstract

Field studies of the ecology of the breeding birds in northern Maine were conducted by the authors during the early summer of 1949. These studies were made during the period June 3 to July 11 inclusive, in the vicinity of the village of Guerette, located about 16 miles southeast of Fort Kent, Aroostook County, in the extreme northern tip of Maine. The region investigated covered most of the area within a radius of 8 miles of Guerette and included Square, Cross, Mud and Long Lakes, and the northern edge of Madawaska Lake. Much of the information obtained was accumulated in conjunction with detailed studies to determine the degree of control exerted l)y natural breeding bird populations of the boreal spruce-fir forest on a moderate infestation of the spruce budworm (Choristoneura flunziferana Clem.). The results of this work will appear in a separate report.
