Abstract

Although human beings have overused natural resources throughout history, today's ecological problems are relatively recent phenomena. In addition to local environmental risks (such as noise and air pollution in metropolitan areas), global ecological problems (such as climate change and loss of biodiversity) in particular are urgent societal and political issues. This entry portrays the three areas of research in which environmental sociologists most actively contribute to the study of ecological problems: theories of the emergence of ecological problems; environmental attitudes and behavior of the general public; and environmental behavior of corporate actors (businesses, environmental movement organizations, and the state).
