Abstract

Abstract This paper examines the objectives and advantages to industry of biological monitoring in the context of responsible management. It attempts to define the differing roles of the industrial ecologist and those working for regulatory agencies or academic organisations. The main objectives of industrial ecological monitoring are illustrated by examples taken from the international programme conducted by a major oil company. The type of environmental questions posed by management are listed. The paper discusses the importance of baseline data and reference sampling sites from which natural and man-induced changes can be distinguished. There is a brief discussion on the development of appropriate data handling techniques. In conclusion the advantages to industry from operating ecological monitoring schemes are outlined.
