Abstract

The aim of the chapter is to highlight the current state of the development of the circular economy (CE), and to provide examples of pioneer eco-innovative CE companies in the European Union (EU), as well as to present indicators of CE performance. The chapter also presents the role of eco-innovations (EIs) in the transition towards the CE, following the relevant literature on these topics. Changing the system, paradigm and industrial model requires small steps towards implementing circular production processes and eco-innovative solutions. As innovation has enabled the development of industrial low emissions solutions in European companies, it is a key element of the transformation towards CE development. The case study from countries selected from the European Eco-Innovation Observatory will be used and scrutinised for innovative solutions in Europe to identify how companies close the material loops and reduce the resources needed. It was observed that in the analysed cases, the CE begins from EIs related to material reuse (e.g. Eco-alf and Ecobean companies).
