The author takes the unusual course of critically reviewing his own book on the subject, discussing in some detail the arguments for and against ecosystems, his ‘bathtub theorem’, the three evolutions of the Universe, his concept of the ‘empty niche’ in biology, societal evolution and artefacts, biological catastrophes, ecological and human interactions, social ecosystems and finally, evolutionary economics.
