Abstract

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a severe complication of burn and smoke inhalation injury and is associated with high mortality rates. This chapter reviews the management of burn patients from the prehospital setting to clinical management and cannulation of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) in the intensive care unit. ECMO can be a life-saving bridge to recovery for burn patients with pulmonary edema following excessive fluid resuscitation. A case discussion followed by a critical review of the literature and critical care board-type, multiple-choice questions summarizing this chapter as a concise learning and study tool for the management of burn patients on ECMO.
