Malgre l'importance quantitative de l'emprunt fait par Bonaventure dans son « Lignum vitae » au « De Humanitate Christi » (attribue a S. Bernard) d'Egbert de Schonau, on ne peut pas parler d'adaptation mecanique ou d'imitation servile. Bonaventure a entierement fait sien son emprunt, il l'a subordonne a ses structures et a ses themes. Il s'agit d'un processus d' « appropriation meditative » semblable a l'assimilation traditionnelle de l'Ecriture
