Abstract

The Achilles complex (AC) is made by the proximal myotendineous junction, the Achilles tendon, the paratenon and adjacent synovial bursae, and the distal enthesys. It is frequently injured in athletes, due to repetitive microtrauma and overuse leading to limitation in sport activities and consequent long recovery time. This presentations is made by two parts, each having a specific goals. In the first part we will present the technique of examination as well as the normal US appearance of the AC, by schematic drawings and simultaneous US live demonstration (Dr. J-L Brasseur). In the second section, after a brief discussion on the patho-mechanism of AC lesions, we will present and discuss the most frequent disease patterns. At the end of the lecture participants will be familiar with the US technique of examination and the normal US anatomy of the AC and will be able to recognize the basic US appearance of its main disorders.
