Abstract

This paper aims to analyze Korean echo questions based on Sobin (2010). I argue that in Korean echo wh-questions (i) CEQ in the outmost CP should undergo Agree with echo wh-phrases, establishing the Probe-Goal relation, (ii) Comp freezing is held, preserving the sentence-type suffix, (iii) echo wh-phrases circumvent the Intervention Effect, providing evidence that they stay in situ at LF, (iv) multiple echo wh-questions have single-pair answers only, again supporting for the in-situ phenomenon, and (v) root scope is taken by the Agree operation. From this analysis, it is concluded that echo wh-questions are formed syntactically, not violating non-echo wh-question formation and that echo wh-phrases do not move while non-echo whs-in situ have been arguable between non-movement and covert movement.
