Abstract

A CASE OF hydatid disease is presented which represents some unusual aspects of a disease encountered infrequently in this country. Judged by world standards, the pulmonary cyst in this patient was quite large. In addition, the best available serologic tests for echinococcosis were negative in this patient. A short description of the disease, its natural history, symptoms, and treatment are included. Report of a Case A 21-year-old Creek sailor was referred to Jefferson Medical College Hospital on Sept 19, 1961, after x-rays revealed a large density in his right hemithorax. A farmer and shepherd in his homeland, he had gone to sea two years previously and for the last year was bothered by intermittent right subscapular pain for which he was unable to receive medical attention. When he reached the port of Philadelphia, his complaint of back pain prompted x-ray examination. He was then referred to this hospital for definitive
