Abstract

(N Engl J Med. 2023; 388:2326–2337) The diagnosis of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome is a frequent occurrence within US hospitals. Most often neonates are evaluated for withdrawal-related symptoms with the Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Scoring Tool and the associated modifications, however this approach may lead to overuse of pharmacologic agents such as morphine. These authors sought to evaluate whether the Eat, Sleep, Console approach could reduce length of hospital stays experienced by neonates without compromising their safety.
