Abstract

Salt-induced stone weathering is often erroneously listed among the physical causes of damage when it is in fact physicochemical. We introduce here a succinct version of the theory behind crystallization pressure along with a simple yet dramatic demonstration of the damage induced in sandstone by sodium sulfate. The contents here presented might be implemented in chemistry for cultural heritage, conservation science, geosciences, and materials science undergraduate courses.
