Abstract
This chapter documents the constitution of an “East German” identity for young adults born in Germany between 1990 and 1995. It applies data from Imitation Games in Berlin, Bremen and Rostock with young East- and West German participants. The narratives concern the constitution of an East German identity through the socialization of participants’ parents, the degradation of East German biographies, and the “othering” of East Germans. After focusing on the younger group, the chapter highlights the differences in cohorts ranging from participants born before 1970 through those born after 1990. Finally, this chapter posits that East German identity is never-ending, and the idea that East Germany and West Germany will be united in terms of identity is not true for Germans born after 1990.
