Abstract

Chapter 2 analyzes East Asian popular culture in the early 20th century, focusing on Jin Yan (金焰), the emperor of film in Shanghai, China. It emphasizes Shanghai since the city was considered the most cosmopolitan society in Asia in the period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While the traditional research that focuses on popular culture has centered on media, text, fandom and recently celebrities, media hub’s importance should be stressed; therefore, the research questions in this chapter include 1) On what grounds did Shanghai become an early pop cultural hub in Asia? and 2) Under what circumstances did a Korean actor to become a star in the Chinese film industry?
