Easing the Passage: The Chaplain’s View of Prison Hospice

Abstract

This article looks at end-of-life care in corrections through theministry of three working chaplains: Rev. Keith Knauf, director of pastoral care services, California Medical Facility, Vacaville Rev. John Moyna, chaplain at Coxsackie Regional Medical Unit at Coxsackie Correctional Facility and pastor of St. Mary’s Church, Coxsackie, New York Rev. Judith Steele, chaplain at the Oregon State Penitentiary, Salem, where she coordinates the inmate volunteer program Although all three are Christian-based clergy, their ministry prescindsdenomination as they discuss the role of chaplains in interdisciplinaryteams, their liaison with families and volunteers, bereavement, and theuniversality of passage, even in corrections.
