Abstract

The American Academy of Pediatrics tasks primary care providers (PCPs) with identifying and ensuring that children who need special education receive appropriate services through partnerships with parents, caregivers (eg, grandparents), and families (herein: parents) and school systems.1 This is no small task, since 7.1 million public school students received special education services through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) during the 2019-2020 school year.2 IDEA entitles children ages 3-21 years old to free appropriate public education (FAPE) through individualized education programs (IEPs).
