Abstract

A spectral study of the behavior of systems subjected to earthquakes is presented, in which single degree of freedom systems with elasto-plastic and bilinear hysteresis are considered. The system parameters that varied are natural period, damping, yield strength, and strength characteristics. The results, presented in graphical and tabular form, permit a comparison of elasto-plastic action with bilinear action. All investigations were conducted with the aid of a digital computer, using the accelerograms for the N-S component of the El Centro, Calif., earthquake of May 18, 1940, and the N69W component of the Taft, Calif., earthquake of July 21, 1962. It is concluded that bilinear hysteresis, as compared to elasto-plastic hysteresis, reduces the maximum lateral deflection and permanent set, that the energy input is affected only slightly by the presence of plasticity, and that plasticity reduces the total inelastic displacement.
